Garvagh Forest, Londonderry

Badger Rating 3.5/5
11km of forest paths, and lots of new sections of singletrack. There are some excellent xc trails, about 1.5 to 2hrs riding to be had.

Getting There

Park in Garvagh village or in the Forest Car Park, which on the western side of the main A29 road, between Garvagh High School and the Ballinameen Bridge over the Agivey River.

Trail Description

Garvagh Forest is just on the western outskirts of Garvagh village, and has around eleven km of paths and roads (including 2 waymarked walks) winding through the woods.

Of interest in Garvagh Forest is the Garvagh Pyramid, created as a burial chamber for Lord Garvagh in the 19th Century. Unfortunately the pyramid was never allowed to fulfil the task it was designed for and was sealed shut with no incumbent a number of years ago.

There are picnic tables and an Information Board situated at the Car Park, so you can find your way around easily. There is also a permanent orienteering course created by the North West Orienteering Club.

  • Superb spot for a quick blast, and particularly if you have youngsters who you want to bring on. This is great for skills development, with lots of little sections and skills loops to practice on. Great fun and plenty of pedalling to be had. Not much crack for the DH brigade, but super XC. Check out www.carnwheelers.co.uk for regular rides there.
  • Excellent natural xc trails, some short sharp technical climbs followed by short technical descents. Some flowy trails and a few small jumps.

Great in dry weather but doesnt get really dirty unless in very wet weather.

Well done to all the local builders and maintainers.
  • The new trails build here by the local club show the potential this place has to be great! Its mostly XC with a couple of short DH runs. It flows together nicely with two short runs on forest tracks to link the single track together. The loop can be finished in 1-1&1/2 hours and with different routes and be ridden differently each time! well worth a visit!
